District Governor Shirley Hazen

"Stepping Up to Lionism"





          Shirley Hazen joined Lions Club in 1992.  She is a Charter President of the Payette Syringa Lions.  She has served as President of the club four times,  Vice President two times, and Tail Twister.  She has been a board member for thirteen years and recruited over fifteen new members for her club. 

          Shirley served Lions District 39W for the past year as Vice District Governor and was elected District Governor in the spring for the 2009-2010 year. She was a member of the District 39W Cabinet as Leader Dog Chair and Zone Chair for four years.  She has also been Youth Exchange Chair, Leo co-Chair, and Mid-Winter co-Chair.  In her role  as Leader Dog Chair, she raised nearly $40,000 for Leaders Dogs for the Blind.  She was also instrumental in raising funds to purchase a Braille machine and computer for a blind student in Payette and has submitted four applications for blind and visually impaired individuals to attend Leader Dog School in Rochester, Michigan, to obtain a dog guide.

           Shirley has attended the USA/Canada Leadership Forum four times, and has attended Leadership trianing in Chicago, Denver, and Boise.  She received a special certificate and letter for being an outstanding student at Leadership Training.

           She has received numerous awards.  She is a Melvin Jones Fellow, has received two International President Certificates of Appreciation, the International President Retention Award, the 100% President Award, a Youth Exchange Award, and several District service awards. 

           Shirley and her husband Ed of 42 years have hosted 16 Youth Exchange students.  They are the proud parents of three grown children who have all served in the U.S. Navy.  They also have six grandchildren, of whom two are Leos.

           District Governor Shirley feels strongly about being a Lion Leader.  She will strive to emphasize the importance of being a Lion and the value of serving in communities.  Her motto for her term is "Stepping Up to Lionism".
