The following is a
synopsis of the highlights of the session
Club Reports
Capital Lions- Laura
Walls, President
- Six new members, 2 are
transfers the other 4 are new Lions
- Charter Party will be
on March 15th (tentatively) at Louie’s in Meridian
- Fund raising should
exceed last years
Meridian Lions-Cheri
Price, President
- Donated $600 to Zoo
Boise to meet DG Deanna’s Challenge
- Netted $4500 from
rodeo, weather was really poor on Saturday which dropped attendance
- Rodeo Queens contest is
on April 29th, which is the same date as World Wide Induction Day,
perhaps the two can be combined, tabled for later discussion
- Now have 40 club
members with 2 or 3 since the last Zone Meeting
Kuna Lions-Jack Graham,
President
- Building the “Mason
House” with as many donations as they can get for labor and materials. Mason
is a small child who suffers from hurler’s disease which is a degenerative
condition causing a short life expectancy. The proceeds from the sale of the
house will be donated towards treatment. The house is located in Kuna and is
a two story, three bedrooms, about 1400 square foot, nice family home.
- The second edition of
the car show is planned for the spring and they are expecting 500 to 1000
entries, so the chair is scouting locations since Kuna does not have the space
for it.
Star Lions-Kathy Donahue,
2nd VP
- New club, they are
working on identifying community needs
- Conducting membership
drive, at least one transfer member and have recruited several new members.
Boise Vista-Travis Palmer,
3rd VP
- Raised between $5k and
$6k from Christmas Tree Sale
- Casino Nights are
wrapping up for the season
Boise Riverside-Angela
Qualman, VP
- Casino nights are
wrapping up
- Charter party in March
- Donated Christmas gifts
and game hens to the Garden City Senior Center
- 4 new members
- Angela is also the Zone
4/5 liaison for Sight First II and the Sight and Hearing Liaison, so she will
be visiting all the clubs in the zone next year.
- The Gowen Field
Officers Club project was completed, first time it has been updated since the
60’s (Rock On!).
Boise Club-Angella Eckert,

- Membership has stayed
even
- Golf tournament is the
major fund raiser and will be held on May 11, 2006 at Shadow Valley GC
- Participated in the
Boise River Cleanup last Fall
- The club worked with
Riverstone School on the Peace Poster and it was very well received by the
school
Boise Bench Club-Curt
Kelley, member
- Major fundraising
projects are Jackpot X and Boise Best Antique Show. The club sells
advertising and assists the vendors in setting up and breaking down the
displays for tips.
- The club provided
Christmas Gifts for Mary Haven and also donates money and labor to help
maintain the facility.
- New meeting location,
Plantation Country Club.

Proud Lion/Proud Sponsor
Program, this is part of the mentoring program and gets both new and long term
members involved, the worst thing for a new member is to be ignored and not
involved in Lions activities. Both Lion Laura W and Curt Kelley have pins and
cards. When the requirements are completed, please submit a picture and short
article to Paw Prints.
World Wide Induction Day,
April 29, 2006 – Lion Curt Kelley

Meridian Lions would like to
combine the Induction Ceremony and Meridian Lions Rodeo Queen contest. Meeting
attendees agreed. The Contest is held at the Assembly of God in Meridian which
has room, details will be announced at a later date.

contest, bring what you have as this is the preliminary review before Sun Valley

Laura Walls discussed the Quilt
and Tall Tales contest, have tall tales entry to DG Deanna or Dist. Sec Laura by
February 3rd.

Jim Spanberger discussed the Hors
D’oeuvre challenge and threw down the gauntlet to PDG Gary
Officers School Training
- Curt Kelley
- PDG Jim Barley will
conduct training which will be scheduled from 10 AM to 2 or 3 PM.
- March 25th
has been sent to PDG Jim as the date which will work for Zones 4 and 5. Curt
will follow-up with Zone 9.
- Location Burger and
Brew on Fairview
Progress Reports on
organizing new clubs – Extension Chair- PDG Gary D’Orazio
- Star Lions is the
newest club and meets at the Star Fire Station at 7Pm on the 2nd
Monday. This is a fast growing area with a lot of potential
- Meridian area is also
growing and he is working on setting up a new club which would meet for lunch
- Nampa also may have a
new club
- Horse Shoe Bend
folded. When Lion John Wojahn moved the club simply folded and did not want
any assistance to continue.
- Need to grow faster and
get media cooperation, signature activities, such as participating in parades
helps develop media awareness.
Community Service Award-
PDG Gary D’Orazio
- The purpose of this
award is to recognize individuals who embody the spirit of Lionism in their
everyday lives, regardless of any association with Lions Club or any other
service organization. One of the purposes of Lionism is to encourage service
minded people to contribute to the community. The program should also raise
visibility for Lions Clubs
- Scheduled for June 6th
at the Doubletree Riverside
- Next committee meeting
is on February 15th at Radean’s
- The clubs have adequate
time to select a good recipient, so they should be working on it.
- Five clubs attended the
1st meeting and 2 or three additional will participate.
Jackpot X – Lion Ken
Marchetti, Chair
- Bench sponsored fund
(and fun) raiser for the Sight and Hearing foundation. Takes place at Cactus
Pete’s in Jackpot, Nev on September 9th.
- The awards
banquet/raffle will be held on Saturday, this is a change from the Sunday
brunch as in the past.
- The raffle items and
tickets have been kicked up a notch, with the grand prize of a Dell Laptop and
other valuable prizes for succeeding winners.
- Lions Golf Challenge,
first year for a trophy and banner for the winning team consisting of golfers
from the same club.
- Need major sponsors
- Forms to be mailed out
the week of January 30th.
Winston Churchill
Memorial Golf Tournament – Lion Dave Kleinfeldt
- First annual will be
held on June 22nd at Boise Ranch GC, beginning at 11AM
- Cost $65.00
- Proceeds will go to the
Dorothy Day House and Mary Haven. Dorothy Day house provides housing for up
to 8 chronically homeless people and Mary Haven is a foster care facility for
up to 6 children on a short term basis.
- Outback Steakhouse may
donate lunch, which will greatly increase the amount of money raised for the
two charities.
- Publicity will start in
earnest in March
Sight and Hearing
Foundation – Jay Lugo, Executive Director.
- 5 year Strategic plan
was reviewed. – Position for Potential Growth, Recruit and empower personnel,
increase eye donations by 100%, establish key partners with other eye banks
and establish a satellite office in Eastern Idaho.
- The mission has been
expanded to include “serve throughout the world” since Lions is an
international organization.
- The Eye Bank tied a
record of 276 transplants for the second time since 1969
- 65000 pairs of glasses
were recycled in MD 39, fantastic number.
- Meeting with Blue
Cross/Blue Shield, Idaho Power and US Bank for Sponsorships for the MSU.
Additionally, BSU is also interested in re-establishing a program.
- The Personal Assistance
budget of $90K ran out in March last fiscal year, so the foundation is seeking
further grants to be able to meet the need for this fiscal year and recently
received $5K from Monsanto.
- Moving to a new
building at 70 N Latah sometime this year. It is on a lease with option to
buy as LCI will provide grant money to remodel, but not to purchase property.
Eventually there will be room for Lions Clubs to meet, currently eyeglasses
are being sorted and stored there for shipment.
- Another big project is
Idaho Monopoly which is chaired by Lion Ron Gill. There is a potential for up
to $90K for the Foundation.
