Business and Reports
The minutes of the Zone Chair
Meeting held on January 29, 2005 were reviewed by the District Secretary with no
changes. A high percentage of the cabinet was in attendance.
Financials – Vice District
Governor, Treasurer Deanna Rostock
- Two big donations, $75,000
from LCIF for Hope House and $6,000 from the Boise Open for parking
attendants.
- There is currently $4866 in
the bank account and will be about $2800 at the end of the year, dues have not
changed in several years, however costs have been increasing, which has caused
the amount of funds left at year end to trend downward.
Laura Walls moved to accept the
minutes as presented, seconded by several and accepted.
Public Relations-Gene Kelly
- Needs help getting publicity
as he has not had as much coverage as he would like. Kathy Steed stated it is
difficult to get coverage in major papers, but local papers are easier to work
with. She is an editor of a community paper in Emmett and is associated with
the Press Tribune in Nampa.
- Gene had an excellent
article and pictures published in the February Lions Magazine. He was also
able to get TV coverage for a Christmas Eve march to the State Capitol
Building.
- He strongly suggested that
each club should have a publicity chairman.
- Gene will be next year’s
District Publicity Chair
Veterans Affairs-Jack Benson
- He is working on a project
to refurbish the Officers Club at Gowen Field. He would like assistance from
Lions members for labor and material. They need carpet, paint and
furniture. The GSA will redo two of the three sections of the club, but not
the lounge area.
- Asked for more participation
by the Lions Clubs in Veterans Affairs
Membership-Louis Pfleger
- The total membership of
Lions Clubs is not much larger than Rotary International. We need to ask
people to become members as our membership is becoming older and has remained
stagnant in total numbers in District 39W for many years.
- The DG and VDG are running a
membership contest and will cook a meal for the club with the largest
percentage of growth between January 31ST and June 15th.
Zone 3 Chairman-Bob Flowers
- Lion Flowers also works with
Sight and Hearing and the MSU and is working on a project to provide a Retinal
Camera which detects Retinopathy in premature babies, this condition can cause
blindness. A Ret Cam can also detect “shaken baby syndrome” and Idaho does
not have a Ret Cam. The cost is $75,000 and LCIF has pledged $38,000 and
between other sources and $300 from each Lions Club, the amount should be
raised. The Ret Cam would be located at St Luke’s hospital in Boise, Id.
Kathy Steed-Gem Lions Club,
Emmett, Idaho
Tsunami Fund-DG Gary D’Orazio
for PDG Jim Barley
-
There is over $4,000 in the
District fund at the present time. Clubs can designate funds in increments of
$1,000 for Melvin Jones awards with the recipient to be named later. The
clubs need to contact Jim Barley for proper paperwork. The deadline to
receive the funds by LCIF is March 31, 2005.
White Cane- Eyvonne Nichols
-
Very few clubs participated;
there is a State designated White Cane day in May, when the drive should be
done by all participating clubs.
-
Suggested that each Club have
a White Cane Chairman.
-
This would be good for
publicity as members would be very visible.
Patriotism/Peace Poster-Shawna
Hagerty
- She has several Peace Poster
Packets for $8.78 each
- The Patriotism essay is due
on April 2, 2005.
Youth Outreach, John Wojahn
- Lions Quest is in a few
schools
- Lion’s opportunities for
Youth Award is a good way to recognize youth. The Silver award is for 50
hours of community service and Gold award for 100 hours.
- Liberty Day is March 16,
2005 and he would like to see the Lions do it in the future.
Leos- Deanna Rostock
- A Leos Convention will be
held on March 19th at the Job Corps in Nampa, with seminars, meals
and other activities. The District Governor will also hand out Gold and
Silver awards.
- The Capital Lions Club has a
new member who works for the Job Corps and is willing to help set up a Leos
Club there.
LCIF Tsunami Fund-PID Floyd
Miller
- $5,000,000 has been
earmarked for assistance. There are 73,000 Lions in the affected area and
LCIF has reacted quickly to provide money for basic living needs. Clubs can
designate funds in increments of $1000 for Melvin Jones Fellowships with the
recipients to be named later. This is an unusual action as Melvin Jones funds
are normally unrestricted funds and this is the only time LCIF has accepted
designated funds for Melvin Jones Fellowships.
New Business
District Governor Gary D’Orazio
stated he feels Clubs should help DG candidates as is it is expensive to run for
office.
Multiple District Convention in
Sun Valley May 22 to 24, 2005-Bob Storm Council Chair
- There is no Host Club for
the convention. He needs help with publishing the program, including
printing and advertising. Any excess proceeds will go to the Sight and
Hearing foundation. (PID Floyd Miller thinks Twin Falls Lions might be
interested). The registration for the convention, including meals, is fairly
high, however this is a world class resort and it is a great location for the
convention.
- The Environmental Photo
Contest for LCIF only had two entries. Lion Deanna Rostock from Boise Vista
Lions is the winner.
Dues Increase-District Governor
Gary D’Orazio
- Dues have not changed in
several years and costs have continued to increase. The cabinet has proposed
a $2.00 per annum increase. PDG Jack Benson suggested that $5.00 would be
more appropriate. After much discussion, a straw vote was taken and support
was very strong for $5.00. A motion will be presented and voted on for $5.00
increase during the General Membership meeting on February 26th.
As no other new business was
presented, the meeting was adjourned at 7 PM.
Yours in Lionism
Curt Kelley
